Meryl Dorey, die Präsidentin der AVN – AntiAustralian Vaccination Network, konträr zu ihrem Namen eine Organisation, die strikt gegen Impfungen ist – ist zurückgetreten.

Ob dies direkt mit dem endgültigen AUS für Dr. Wakefields Autismus-Studie (welche seltsamerweise nur in den Medien Relevanz hatte) zu tun hat weiss ich nicht, sie gibt jedenfalls andere Gründe an. Was auch immer.

Dies ist ein Rundschreiben der Australischen Anti-AVN Bewegung auf Facebook, welches heute rausging:

In a surprise announcement, Meryl Dorey has admitted defeat and will step down as President of the Australian Vaccination Network.

Unless the AVN receives a large injection of cash, or someone equally as nutty to the point of insanity steps up to the plate, The AVN will cease operation at the end of this month.

This has been a long fought campaign and at times it has been extremely rough. All that hard work has now produced a result and that result is MISSON ACCOMPLISHED!

Stop the AVN would like to thank Peter Bowditch for his tireless work chasing the AVN for the last 10 years, Dr Rachael Dunlop for her work over the years exposing the AVN, Ken McLeod for his bravery in submitting a complaint to the HCCC and weathering the acid-tongue backlash from the AVN, Christine Bayne, Jason Brown, Dave the Happy Singer and Peter Tierney for there ability to argue face-to-face with the anti-vaccination crowd.

Most of all, on be half of the entire organisation, I would like to thank Dana McCaffery, who gave her life and was undoubtedly the catalyst for this movement. Rest in peace, sweetie – you are the reason and the one who gave us all the power to fight.

After the end of February, when the AVN does actually close, we will be having a victory party in Sydney. Everyone is invited and I will send out an official notice and invitation when details are known.

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this campaign, regardless of how small your role was. This is YOUR moment – drink it up!

Bad Astronomer Phil Plait hat sich natürlich sofort auf die Sache gestürzt und ein Blog verfasst.

Die Australischen Skeptiker und ihre Verbündeten haben wirklich Grund zum feiern: Dies ist wahrlich ein großer Tag. Die AVN haben nur Falschinformationen verbreitet und Ängste geschürt während sie behaupten, kritisch zu sein und doch nur wollen, dass Impfstoffe sicherer werden. Meryl Dorey hat sich mehrfach als unsensibler Klotz zu erkennen gegeben. Auch, als die kleine Dana McCaffery an Keuchhusten gestorben war (die Immunisierungsrate der Bevölkerung war stark zurückgegangen) konnte Dorey nicht mal davon ablassen, ihren Anti-Impfungs Müll auf der Gedenkseite für Dana abzulassen. Eine AIDS-Leugnerin ist sie auch so nebenbei… Dass sie die Organisation verläßt ist sicherlich ein großer Verlust für diese, verlieren sie doch die größte Hetzrednerin von allen.

Wär ja schön, wenn sich die AVN tatsächlich auflösen würde, doch ich bin hier eher der Meinung von Phil Plait. Der Verein wird vermutlich irgendwie weiter dahintreiben und Unsinn verbreiten, aber seine Position wird stark geschwächt sein.

I can hope, though, that without Dorey’s voice, the AVN will be far weaker, and if the charges against them hold up, they may fall apart entirely. That would be a very good thing indeed.
